When I first joined, I quickly got addicted to Instagram.

Around September of 2014, I created an Instagram account for Undercover Architect.  [You can find it here.]  I had resisted it for ages, worried it would just be another social media platform I’d have to maintain.

CONFESSION: I am a little addicted to Instagram.

For a visual arena such as design, home design and architecture, Instagram is a haven.

I now have over 900 followers there, and a lot of people who find me there, have found me there first.  So, for those of you who’ve come to the UA Community via another route, I thought I’d share some of the favourite posts and images from @UndercoverArchitecture.

I use Instagram mainly to share images of home design that capture my attention as gorgeous, life-enriching spaces, rooms and features – and then I decode them.  I use my comments to help explain what’s working, and to challenge you to consider how to bring it into your own home design.  The things that get a lot of love are:  kitchens, really lovely outdoor spaces, anything shipping-container-conversion-related, and sunsets at my home 😉

I also occasionally share images from where I live in the Byron Bay Hinterland, and you’ll notice that most images posted on a Thursday (which is my weekday off absorbed in spending time with my youngest child and catching up on domestic stuff) will generally be of the delicious food at the Byron Bay Farmers Markets!

RG @homeadore I’ve posted this Bondi Home before by LSA Architects, but just came across more great piccies of it. A narrow floor plan, I love how it uses the screens as a decorative and functional element to shade and contain spaces. Great indoor/outdoor connections through bifolding doors and windows where it makes a difference. Lovely use of contrasting materials and colours to accentuate light in the home. Clever storage ideas. Now this wouldn’t have been cheap, however a lot of the ideas are achievable on any budget. RG @ihomedesign The Seaview House by Jackson Clement Burrows. The trick with this kitchen is that the whole rear wall either side of it is joinery, and the kitchen just in a different finish to what’s around it. I love that it is flush with the adjacent walls, so it seems integrated with the interior skin of the building. Really simple palette and the black recess behind the stools is great. RG @walkamongthehomes more #swimming #poolaction … This time a #concrete #water #tank – seriously! Craned into spot, tiled on the inside. Sitting out if the ground like this, it doesn’t require a pool fence on its outer edge (although you can’t circumnavigate the pool on a coping for easy access and maintenance). There’s a mob on the#goldcoast doing these! More investigations are required I think!! #ualoves #undercoverarchitect#design #home #outdoors

You have to be careful putting high ceilings and voids over areas you wish to sit and #relax in … As they can add drama that isn’t restful and makes you feel dwarfed in the space. This though, totally works. The overall volume is broken up by 1. The different treatment of glazing … Big windows then small #windows over. 2. The #fireplace feature stops in alignment with the glazing and 3. The track #lighting creates an imaginary ceiling at that lower height. This configuration of a shower next to bath is a great way to save space, consolidate your ‘wet zones’ and looks extra clean and spacious here with the seamless floor and frameless glass shower screen.
