What are the must-haves for a sustainable build?
And what do you need to know if building from hempcrete?
Hamish White, registered builder and director of Melbourne-based building company, Sanctum Homes, tells us more about how to achieve a sustainable build.
Plus, he shares his learnings from working with hempcrete in a new build project.
This is Part 2 of my conversation with Hamish White.
Hello! This is Episode 240, and in it, I’m continuing my conversation with Hamish White from Sanctum Homes, a Melbourne-based building business specialising in passive house, sustainable and high performance homes.
If you haven’t listened to the last episode, and heard Part 1 of my conversation with Hamish, be sure to check that out first.
You can head to Episode 239 – Building Sustainably, and with SIPs or Structural Insulated Panels | Sanctum Homes Part 1 wherever you’re listening to this podcast to access the episode and a free downloadable transcript. And then come back and join us here for Part 2!
In this second part of my chat with Hamish, we talk more about sustainable building, and especially about building with Hempcrete. That’s actually where this episode kicks off, and Hamish has a lot of learnings to share in a project he’s building right now.
We also go through some important must-haves in a sustainable build, particularly if you’re in a similar climate zone to where Sanctum Homes builds. And, we talk more about Builders Declare as well.
Now, let’s dive in!
Let me take a minute to remind you about Hamish, before I jump into Part 2 of my conversation with him.
Hamish White is a registered builder and director of Sanctum Homes. He’s also a founding member of Builders Declare, which you’ll hear more about in this episode.
Sanctum Homes take a collaborative approach, working with you to create an innovative space tailor-made to your needs. They build, extend and renovate beautiful, high performing, energy efficient homes. They also specialise in awesome relationships with their clients, architects, designers, trades, suppliers – and their own team!
Sanctum Homes are Passive House Certified Tradespersons, HIA Greensmart Professionals, and they’re based in Warrandyte, Victoria.
We jump into Part 2 as I ask Hamish to talk with me about Hempcrete, and what he’s been learning about it from his experience on a current project.
I’ve got to know Hamish via an initial connection over social media, as Sanctum Homes have a great instagram account that I suggest you check out for its great education posts on building sustainably.
I’ve also attended several of the Builders Declare webinars or watched them on the YouTube Channel, which you’ll hear Hamish talk about hosting in this episode.
And earlier this year, Hamish started working with us in Live Life Build as a member of our group coaching and mastermind program we have for builders to help them improve their projects, business and life.
In this episode, I ask Hamish questions such as:
- What are his learnings from trying to build the first Passive House certified hempcrete home in Australia and New Zealand
- His top tips for working with hempcrete and what to be aware of
- The must-haves when building a sustainable home, especially in a cold or cooler climate (south as south-Victoria and other parts of Southern Australia)
- How he became a founding member of Builders Declare
