Hello! This is a special series of mini-sodes I’m doing to help you get started on your home design.
These short episodes will help you with the 5 steps you need to take BEFORE you begin your home design.
Why is it important to know what to do before you begin your home design?
Isn’t finding a designer or builder the first step?
Well … in short … no!
Many homeowners, when approaching their new build or renovation project, are not sure where to start.
And yet, in my experience, they’ll still be doing various activities, and even making certain decisions, sometimes without being conscious of it, or knowing if it’s the right and best steps towards the home they’re dreaming of.
What can this look like?
Well, it can look like surfing the internet – or even just instagram, Pinterest and Houzz, saving off images of projects, products and soft furnishings you like the look of and want to remember for later.
It can also look like speaking to friends and family about your project, and gathering input and information, which can vary in its quality!
And it can also look like joining free online groups and forums to surf the conversations happening about renovating and building.
Plus it can also look like trying to figure out the costs and timelines associated with making your project a reality, and digging through all the drama and random information available about construction costs, whether the market is getting better or worse, and if you can afford to create the home you are envisaging for yourself.
And it can also look like finding out more about who you might need, how to go about finding and hiring them, and when you should start talking to them.
For some – and given you’re here, this is you – it can simply mean jumping onto the award-winning Undercover Architect’s resources, including the podcast, as well as my blog, mini-courses and flagship online program, HOME Method.
And by diving into these resources, you’ll be able to learn in a simpler, more streamlined way, so you don’t waste time down Google rabbit holes or getting misled by irrelevant and outdated information.
I am, and have always been, super passionate about creating and sharing reliable, frank, great quality and detailed know-how, insights and expertise to help you design, build and renovate your family home, whoever you’re working with. And whatever your dreams, your location or your budget.
And so, these 5 mini-sodes will be fantastic for learning what you need to know before you begin your home design (whatever your project, and whoever you’re working with).
Now, let’s dive in!
Let’s jump straight into the first of five steps before you begin your home design. And I’m calling this first step: CLARITY.
One common issue I see for homeowners is that there can be a lot of confusion as they get started. From not knowing where or how to get started, to what type of home will really suit them and what it should and shouldn’t include, it can immediately feel overwhelming and stressful, when instead it could be an exciting start to a fantastic journey.
In Step #1, you’ll understand more about the feeling you want to create in your home, the goals you have for your renovation or new build, and the steps you need to take to kick things off, and progress towards your finished home.
By taking this step, you’ll simplify the process of home design for yourself from the outset, and have tools to enable you to sift and filter through the noise that can confuse many as they navigate all the decisions they need to make.
When you achieve CLARITY this way, you’ll have a place to come back to, to benchmark your choices and ensure you’re on the right track throughout your project journey, and especially through the home design phase.

The second step, and second mini-sode, is: COLLECT
You’ll learn how to COLLECT ideas, inspiration and useful knowledge for your own project journey.
In this mini-sode, I’ll share how to be a Design Detective in your surroundings, ways to organise your ideas, and the importance of documenting both your likes and dislikes, to help others understand more about you.
By taking this step, you can be far more productive in how you gather information that’s helpful for your project. Rather than disappearing down a Google rabbit hole or spending forever online searching mindlessly through image after image, or canvassing for the opinions of strangers in Facebook groups.
And you’ll also learn how you can be making the most of your everyday life to help you determine what your future home needs and doesn’t need.

The third step, and third mini-sode, is: CONDITIONS
Learn more about the CONDITIONS that will shape your home design. This includes understanding the orientation of your site, and knowing how the sun moves across your property, as well as researching what your council will allow you to do, and the physical characteristics and qualities of your site or land.
By taking this step, you’ll be able to start your home design process with far better knowledge about what’s possible for your specific site and project goals. And you’ll be able to create a home design that uniquely suits your site.
Plus, you’ll know more about the steps to take to achieve the necessary approvals, and manage the constraints your block of land may place on the shape, size and layout of your home.

The fourth step, and fourth mini-sode, is: CONNECTION
Hear more about determining the relationships between the spaces and rooms of your home to support its functionality, and how to create connections between indoors and outdoors. This will also help you think about the overall layout so your home can really work for you and your family.
By doing this step, you’ll be able to think about your home and its design more holistically.
Instead of just listing out a bunch of rooms and spaces you want to include (like a real estate ad), you’ll start to see how you can potentially build less, but create something far more functional and suitable for your everyday life.
This can assist with budget management and sustainability as well.

The fifth step, and last mini-sode, is: COMMUNICATE
Because once you’ve done all of this preparation before beginning your home design, it’s important you understand the best way to communicate your wishes, wants and needs to anyone you’re going to be working with, so they can get on the same page as you quickly and efficiently.
By doing this step, you’ll set up great collaboration in your project, have the means for explaining what you want to those who need to know, and feel much more in control as the vision for your future home is realised.
